Weekend Tennis

I finally watched the Chennai open in its 14th edition last week and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere.

These matches took me back to my teenage years spent in Calcutta learning to play the game and participating in tournaments and also watching good Davis Cup ties with Ramesh Krishnan, Leander Paes etc..

Growing up watching junior world champion Leander play was wonderful and it was like a dream even for a late beginner like me to play in the same tournaments in the girls category.

This time around there was a new Indian tennis star Somdev, who seemed like a panther on the prowl just like Leander, chasing every possible ball around the court. The crowd was also very supportive and it felt good to cheer for an Indian tennis star after such a long time. I hope his good form continues for a long time to come.

A good beginning for Indian tennis this year.

Tennis is such a brilliant game...i do not play it, but love watching it. The Capitala championship concluded here recently and it was great to watch Andy Murray defeat Nadal. I remember the rainy evenings during Wimbledon, spent in front of the television set, watching the long matches between Edberg and Becker and listening to my parents talk about McEnroe's temper tantrums in his matches against Bjorn Borg. And Graf winning the grand slam in '88...a superb game...changes every minute and a viewer's delight as well.

Looks like we found another person from the same old era in "Blogger". Mid / late eighties... Wimbledon - one of the first live telecasts in India, Becker, Lendl, Edberg, Graf, Navratilova...

Somdev sure looks promising. I just hope he is not given unnecessary attention by the media here like they did to Sania.

Yup I would record those matches and watch them again and again.. But I did see Borg play a few years back and have his autograph. He was still as agile and skillful even in the seniors tourney.

Subhadip :
I guess he deserves a bit of attention as compared to the cricketers around but he seems a lot grounded and passionate about tennis than Sania .. Best not to talk about Sania another Anna.Kurnikova of India :)
